The SCOON INDEX was originally planned to provides links to registered events which have occurred in Scotland since 1855 involving individuals with the surname SCOON or one of its variants. This was made possible by the access provided by GRO(S) in Edinburgh which made it possible to transcribe all the registered entries for SCOON in a reasonable timescale (and at a manageable cost!). Where possible and proved by later certificates or other acceptable data these were linked to earlier Old Parish Record entries. The original version of the index was set up in 2008 and only included individuals born after 1897 where a death has been registered. Links to other records are through unique ID references. Records have the surname SCOON unless otherwise specified. Records are indexed by the first letter of the given name.
UPDATED INDEX
I have been working on an updated version of the index for the last two years, with the aims of correcting errors which have come to light; adding a wider range of information; extending the coverage to earlier Scottish records ; and adding later information for the many individuals in the Index who moved to other parts of the United Kingdom or emigrated throughout the world. The basic access method is unchanged .

Note that the increased coverage means that some of the files for the more common initials are quite large (J, M and W). The tables are best viewed maximised.
In addition to the correction of errors the major changes in the new version are:
the original index only showed fathers and those born with the name SCOON (or variants). The new index shows mothers' details and aims to track the marriages and immediate backgrounds of female SCOONs as far as practicable
the new index shows census data from 1841 to 1911, where possible and appropriate extending this to entries in the equivalent census exercises in England, Wales, Ireland, the United States and Canada
the index still aims to avoid showing data for living individuals but the coverage has increased because the cut-off has been moved to 1911 and improved access to records in England and Wales has allowed deaths there to be identified more readily
where monumental inscriptions have been traced, the index shows the cemetery concerned
the new index still uses the system of identifiing cases by a unique ID, but some of these have changed where, changes have been identified, e.g. where research has shown that cases can be merged.
Change History
All pages are now on line but additional work continues to extend the data and coverage of linked records outside Scotland. So, if you have specific queries or comments now, please get in touch and I will try to help.
ORIGINAL INDEX
The information has not been updated since its original loading but has been kept on-line to assist researchers who made use of the data and may wish to compare with the updated version.
